Reading for fun...

Now that the kids are headed back to school and the weather is starting to get a bit cooler, I'm hoping to find a bit more time to read for pleasure. These are a few of the books I'm looking at reading...stay tuned because in a few weeks I'm going to be giving away a paperback copy of Candis Terry's  SOMETHING SWEETER.

 Publisher's blurb:
To ruin a man’s life once takes a regrettable mistake.
To do so twice takes a woman like Julianne Baxter.
Eleven months ago, Julianne’s statement to the authorities wrongly implicated Patrick, the new Earl of Haversham, in his older brother’s death. The chit is as much trouble as her red hair suggests, and just as captivating. Now she has impetuously tracked him to the wilds of Scotland, insisting that he return home to face a murder charge and save his family from ruin. A clandestine wedding may be the only way to save her reputation—and his neck from the hangman’s noose.

Julianne has no objection to the match. More and more she’s convinced of Patrick’s innocence, though when it comes to igniting her passions, the man is all too guilty. And if they can only clear his name, a marriage made in haste could bring about the most extraordinary pleasure…

Publisher's Blurb:
The men in Texas are hard to resist . . .
Seattle event planner Allison Lane is an expert at delivering the perfect wedding—even if she might not exactly believe in the whole “’til death do us part” thing. When her father decides to tie the knot with a woman he barely knows, Allison heads to Sweet, Texas, to make sure his new honey is the real deal. What she didn’t expect to find at the local honky-tonk was a sexy Southern man as bent on charming her pants off as he is on blowing her “true love doesn’t exist” theory all to hell.

And they always promise . . .
Veterinarian, former Marine, and Sweet’s favorite playboy Jesse Wilder takes one look at Allison and knows she’s a handful of trouble he can’t deny. But even after a sizzling kiss and obvious mutual attraction, it seems Allison has no such problem. When Jesse uncovers her sweet side, can he crush his playboy image, melt her cynical heart, and change her mind about taking a trip down the aisle?

Publisher's Blurb:
The last woman on earth he would ever touch . . .
Declan, the Duke of Banbury, has no interest in ushering Rosalie Hughes, his stepsister, into society.Dumped on him with nowhere else to go, he's determined to rid himself of the headstrong debutante by bestowing on her an obscenely large dowry . . . making her the most sought-after heiress of the Season.

. . . is about to become the only one he wants
But Rosalie isn't about to go along with Declan's plans. Surrounded by fortune hunters, how is she supposed to find a man who truly wants her? Taking control of her fate, Rosalie dons a disguise and sneaks into Sodom, a private club host to all manner of illicit activity—and frequented by her infuriatingly handsome stepbrother.
In a shadowed alcove, Declan can't resist the masked temptress who sets his blood afire . . . any more than Rosalie can deny her longing for a man who will send her into ruin.

Review of HER LAST WHISPER: book #3 Dr. Charlie Stone series by Karen Robards

Karen Robards has done it again, she got me to forget time as I was completely engrossed in her latest installment of her Dr. Charlie Stone series.  She has a very vivid imagination, creating some spectacularly evil serial killers and scenarios.

I loved following Charlie, Michael, Tony, Buzz, and Kaminsky to Las Vegas on their latest case. The dynamic between all of the characters is phenomenal. Tony is still determined to try to get Charlie romantically interested in him, but Michael isn't about to give up on the sizzling chemistry he shares with Charlie...and prove that "Dudly Do Right" doesn't have what she needs.  I also liked seeing Lena's vulnerable side, as the search for her sister intensified. Poor Buzz has his work cut out for him to get Lena to completely give herself to him.

Michael fights a seemingly impossible battle as he tries to avoid Spookville, but some things are just inevitable...unless he can find a loop in the cosmos, though it may be too late.  Charlie could loose him forever.

HER LAST WHISPER contained many twists and turns that I didn't see coming, keeping me on the edge of my seat. The only thing I didn't like about this book was when I realized that I have to wait until the next installment to find out if Charlie and Michael will get their HEA and that it ended at a cliffhanger. :(  I canNOT wait until then!!!!!

Blurb from the publisher:

Madness and murder invaded Dr. Charlotte Stone’s life when she was just a girl—and made her a woman determined to save others from the horror she survived. An expert in the psychology of serial killers, she’s faced down more than her share of human monsters. But Charlie can also communicate with the spirits of those who die violently, an extrasensory skill that has helped the FBI bring lethal predators to justice. Now, after narrowly escaping death a second time, Charlie’s ready to step away from the edge . . . before her luck runs out.

Too bad Charlie is too dedicated for her own good—and too devoted to federal agent Tony Bartoli to say no when he asks her to ride shotgun on yet another risky mission. Of course, she already has her hands full with Michael Garland: the handsome, roguish ghost with whom she’s hopelessly in love—a spirit who depends on Charlie to keep him from slipping forever into the dark side of the afterlife. But in the mortal world, beautiful single women are vanishing from Las Vegas hotels at night. All signs indicate that a psychopath is on the prowl in Sin City, and Bartoli’s FBI colleague Lena Kaminsky has reason to fear that her missing sister may be just the killer’s type.

In a town full of fast players and few rules, flushing out a smooth-talking stalker like the Cinderella Killer might be a loser’s game. But for Charlie, the only way to cage her quarry is to plunge back into the homicidal hell she vowed to leave behind—and may not leave alive.

Review of BOUND BY NIGHT MoonBound Clan Vampires #1 by Larissa Ione

NOTE: This review was originally published September 2013, but with the next book CHAINED BY NIGHT coming out the end of September 2014 I decided to repost! :)

BOUND BY NIGHT introduces us to a new paranormal realm. Vampires are the descendents of two native American tribes, the MoonBound clan and the ShadowSpawn. In this world humans enslave vampires, while the free or “wild” vampires live in secrecy, hiding from VAST—the Vampire Strike Force; hunters out to murder vampires or sell them into slavery; and their biggest enemy, Daedalus Corporation, a company that has no qualms about performing scientific experiments on captured vampires. A company that has created technology to contain vampires: removing fangs, electric collars, remote access microchips, all to make them safe for humans to use as slaves.

Riker of the MoonShadow clan hates humans, specifically the Martins. Because of them he lost his wife and child. He has been waiting to gain his revenge for years, and now is his chance. Daedalus Corporation has kidnapped Neriya, a ShadowSpawn vampire who was visiting the MoonBound. In order to stop a war, Riker needs to rescue Neriya. The easiest way to do this, he assumes, is to kidnap Daedalus Corporation's CEO, Dr. Nicole Martin.

As a child, Nicole witnessed a horrifying event convincing her that vampires are evil. Now she is face to face with her nightmare. Riker and Nicole have a shaky start with an extremely negative intertwined past they need to overcome to save the vampires.

Larissa Ione has done it again, she lured me in with the promise of a sexy new vampire series and HOOKED me! I freaking loved this book and could gush about it for a very VERY long time. I already tell everyone I know who likes paranormal romance that Larissa Ione is a MUST read author, BOUND BY NIGHT is no exception.

There is so much going on in this story as it's the set up of the series, but that doesn't take anything away from the romance of Riker and Nicole. The storyline is dark and sometimes a bit brutal, but bits of sarcastic humor seamlessly blended in keep it from being depressing. Mmm...and I can't forget the sizzling sexual tension that kept both Riker and Nicole on their toes, and the way they steamed up the pages when at last they could no longer resist each other. These guys quickly moved to my "favorite couples" list. That and the fact that one of my favorite tropes (I can't say which it is, as it would be a spoiler!) was used made this one of my favorite books that I've read in a long time.

All of the characters are very complex and well fleshed out. I was captivated not only by Riker and Nicole, but many of the side characters also intrigued me as I wondered who else was going to have the chance of finding their HEA. The MoonBound clan leader, Hunter; the sexy loner, Myne; bad-ass vampire Katina, and that's just the tip of the interesting characters.

I can't wait to delve back into this new world of the MoonBound Clan Vampires, but I'm not disappointed that as I wait I will get to (finally!!!) read Reaver and Harvester's story in December. I've been waiting a while for their story. :) I'm glad that Larissa will be going back into the Demonica and Lords of Deliverance universes, as I'm not ready to give them up.

BOUND BY NIGHT is a solid 5 Rambling Heart read!

Review of ONCE MORE MY DARLING ROGUE: book #2 Scandalous Gentlemen of St. James by Lorraine Heath

I'm not always a fan of the amnesia trope, but I felt that Ms. Heath did a great job using it. I really liked Drake and Ophelia's love story.  There was a lot of great love/hate moments and their chemistry lit up the pages.

I didn't agree with Drake's choice to keep Ophelia in the dark of her true identity, yet I could understand why he wanted to take her down a few notches...but being able to see the other side of the story, I could understand why Ophelia treated Drake the way she did.  I think that Drake did a great job of groveling to earn Ophelia's love.

Both Drake and Ophelia had some MAJOR emotional damage, but their romance was written in a way that I believed they found healing in each other, and truly found their HEA (happily ever after).
Blurb from the Publisher:
They are England's most eligible bachelors, with the most scandalous reputations. But for the right woman, even an unrepentant rogue may mend his ways . . .

Born to the street but raised within the aristocracy, Drake Darling can't escape his sordid beginnings. Not when Lady Ophelia Lyttleton snubs him at every turn, a constant reminder he's not truly one of them. But after rescuing her from a mysterious drowning, he realizes she doesn't remember who she is. With plans to bring her to heel, he insists she's his housekeeper—never expecting to fall for the charming beauty.

While Ophelia might not recall her life before Drake, she has little doubt she belongs with him. The desire she feels for her dark, brooding employer can't be denied, regardless of consequences. So when Ophelia's memory returns, she is devastated by the depth of his betrayal. Now Drake must risk everything to prove she can trust this rogue with her heart once more.

Review of THE EARL'S MISTRESS by Liz Carlyle

Liz Carlyle has been a favorite author and an auto-buy for me for many years now, but sadly, THE EARL'S MISTRESS isn't one of her better books. The writing wasn't bad, it was more that I really didn't like either Isabella nor Anthony.  I can't put my finger on what it was about them, but they just didn't work for me.

I felt that the romance between Isabella and Anthony was rushed and forced. I enjoy books with BDSM and hot, erotic sex scenes, and there was plenty of them in THE EARL'S MISTRESS, but I have to have an emotional connection with the characters to keep me interested in the story. I found that I couldn't believe in their Happily Ever After with their relationship feeling so contrived. I cringe to say it, but I kind of didn't want them to end up together.

I will still buy and look forward to Ms. Carlyle's books upcoming books, I've loved too many of her previous books to give up after one I didn't care for.

From the publisher:
New York Times bestselling author Liz Carlyle creates her darkest, most sensuous story yet, as a delectable but desperate governess runs headlong into the path of a notorious rake
Women rarely refuse the wicked Earl of Hepplewood, whose daring exploits are only whispered about. But when his new governess answers his proposition with a slap, then stalks out, references in hand, Hepplewood finds more than his face is burning.

Isabella Aldridge has brains, bravado, and beauty—but the latter is no use to a servant. Her circumstances are desperate, and with Hepplewood's words ringing in her ears, Isabella realizes she must barter her most marketable asset . . . her body.

But when fate sends Isabella back into Hepplewood's arms, the earl must make an impossible choice—draw Isabella down into his sensual darkness, or behave with honor for the first time in his life.

Review: NO IN BETWEEN: an Inside Out book by Lisa Renee Jones

Links:

Publisher's blurb:
The fourth in the Inside Out erotic romance series by New York Times bestselling author Lisa Renee Jones, this steamy novel resolves Chris and Sarah's relationship and leads into Mark's story.

"Chris and I have faced our demons and bared our souls to one another in Paris. Now that we are back home in San Francisco, I want to believe that nothing can tear us apart. Not Ava’s accusations against me to the police, or Chris's fear that he will destroy me as he feels he did Amber. And not Mark, who was once too intimately a part of our lives, and who I can see crumbling inside out. He believes he is invincible, just as I want to believe Chris and I are invincible. We have to be invincible. We need each other too much for any other ending."

****

This is my all-time favorite series.  I love where NO IN BETWEEN picks up and so much is resolved between Sara and Chris. Ms. Jones took me on an emotional roller coaster as we follow Sara and Chris's journey toward their HEA. The truth is discovered about Rebecca and sooooo much happens in this book. Ms. Jones has created such vivid characters that I found my self empathizing with someone I didn't like, I even shed tears in this book over a character that I thoroughly hated in the previous books.

I love that we see more of the darker side of Mark...if there is anyone that deserves to find a happily ever after ending, it is Mark Compton! He does his best to be bad, but I could see the hurt he is struggling with. I can't wait to read more of his story, as he's such a compelling character.
